WHEN

A few months ago, I had my carpet replaced with floorboards. I loved making things as a kid which meant that it became covered in paint and glue. Despite this, I was still a bit sad to see it go. I don’t paint so much anymore; these days I make digital creations. I scanned my carpet and want to recreate my room as it would have in the past.

WHERE

I’d like my project to show how memories connected with spaces. I used to open my door at a specific angle and climb up into the attic space. It connects to a different room so I’ve always thought it would make an interesting portal. Maybe that’s how you access the past version.

WHO

I made this guy in skills, he could live in the room and I could teach him information about the past. To connect with a wider audience the space and information could be inspired more by our collective memory than an accurate depiction of my old room. I don’t really remember what it looked like, but I remember the media and stuff I consumed at the time.

WHY?

In history I looked at how depictions of infinity, you can either do this by depicting space or symbolising time. Depictions of space remind us of our finiteness (death), but they also make us feel powerful because our rational minds can make things like paintings or videogames. This is mostly commonly experienced in architecture, old buildings remind that human can make things which forever. This eternal intergrations of humanity and nature is symbolised over here. Humans don’t last, neither do carpets. Paint stained remains are a reminder of the effect humans can have on their physical environment. In my game yin and yang will be inspired by architecture and nature or technology and life or game and player or physical and digital

WHAT?

I’d quite like to blur the line between physical and digital. The gameplay could feature the Chatbot, but the cutscenes could be live action. For example, I could pop my head out of the attic and explain some metaphysical nonsense. The gameplay will be me talking to myself, and for the portfolio I’ll have to record myself explaining how artistic creations (like the recording) are in a sense infinite, I also made this grumpy interface with Chatgpt. Basically, it could get quite meta. House of Leaves is a book about a house which is bigger on the inside, but the pages come to life fight back against the reader. I’d like my design portfolio to also do this. It could be fun if the game is aware of the video portfolio and it’s hard to tell which is which sometimes. Maybe the Chatbot becomes self-aware, so I have to change its blueprint.

HOW?

For the live action stuff, I could transition between physical and digital like I did in my oner. I could use 3D printings or sketching. The shots could be inspired by ‘Inside,’ where it’s just a guy and a room who’s aware of the invasion of privacy. For the gameplay I could combine these mechanics and attach vive trackers to the cupboards. I’d like to include a range of different ways of turning my room into media. It could be procedural, so you can keep climbing into the attic to find a new room and a different version of me. First the carpet changes but everything in the room is different. Is it still the same room as it started as? Maybe, because there’s someone who remembers all the space. Theres a Who in the Where to remember the When. Maybe that’s why your bedroom stays your bedroom.
