Unreal Engine Tools

Two technical R&D exercises in Unreal Engine: an editor tool for art-directable lighting, and a GPU-driven fish shoaling system using material-based animation for runtime performance.

Performance analysis. The aurora's cost comes from multiple translucent layers overlapping, which increases blending and bandwidth. A lighter alternative: panning one or two large aurora textures on the sky sphere keeps translucency to a single layer while still allowing procedural motion and time-of-day control.
Behaviour limitation. Driving motion entirely in the material restricts the fish to forward linear paths; true shoaling reads as chaotic, spiralling, with constant local steering. A Niagara system with flocking modules would capture that behaviour more convincingly, at a slight performance cost over the pure-material approach.
